Most of us in this world love to have dogs at home. Dogs have been good friends to man for years together. They are considered very faithful animals and can be trained to do a lot of things. In our absence it also guards our house from any stranger and alerts by barking when someone unknown is entering its territory. There are different breeds of dogs and each of these are unique in its own way. One of the breeds that I love to keep as a pet is the Great Dane. Great Dane’s are also called Deutshe Dogge or in other in other words Danish Hound. This breed is usually domesticated and is known for its size. Among all the dogs it is considered as one of the tallest dogs and is the current record holder for being the tallest. However, if we look into the history of Great Danes, different scriptures depict different attributes. Great Danes are considered as a very old breed and are also known as the Apollo of breeds. Some of the studies state that these dogs existed in 36 BC and were also found in Germany in 407 AD. It is said that some of these Great Dane even has the ability to bring down a bear or a wild boar.

The Great Dane is considered to be a combination a Wolf hound and an Old English Mastiff. Hence with a selective breeding with the Gray Hound these Great Danes came into existence. Initially these were used for hunting and guarding the estates. Even though they were called Danes, some of the arguments stated that, they had no history connected to Denmark. These breeds got recognized in 1887 and were used for tracking, watchdog and carting. So let’s look into some of the features of Great Danes. They are considered a giant and powerful dog. These dogs have a square shaped body and the females are considered slightly longer than the males. The face is in the shape of a rectangle. The color of the nose is generally black, however, for few it is blue/black on blue color Danes. These blue Danes are generally seen in Harlequins. Its eyes are usually medium in size and are dark. The Great Dane has huge ears which naturally drop down next to their cheeks. However, most people don’t like the dropped years for Great Danes and hence, crop the years when they are young. Once the ears are cropped, the ears stand erect like the one the Alsatians have. However, today it is illegal to crop the ear of a Great Dane in many parts of Europe. The Danes have a well high set neck, which are firm and muscular. Its front legs are straight, with round feet and dark toe nails.

The Great Danes have six colors. The first is the Fawn which looks like yellow gold wearing a black mask. The Black appears on the eye rims and eyebrows, and in its ears and mouth as well. The second is the Brindle Great Dane. It has the color of Fawn and black in a Chevron stripe pattern, this could sometimes look like a tiger stripe as well. Blue Great Dane has a perfect steel blue color. It also has white markings on its chest and toes. The Black is a glossy black and like the blue has white markings on its chest and toes and is very similar to the blue. Great Dane Mantle’s have a black and white mix color which looks like a solid black blanket covering its body. Today, you can visit a lot of sites on the internet to find information about this Giant. I do spend time browsing through the net powered by ATT Uverse Internet.
