Though you will find many shapes & sizes of surgical scissors, each of the surgical scissors have a name of a popular surgeon, there are basically two types: those with straight blades and those with curved blades.

Surgical scissors with curved blades offer directional mobility, visibility and the means to cut tissue in a smooth curve simply. The basic surgical scissor has a range of 15-20 degrees. Curved surgical scissors are extremely useful deep in a wound where horizontal cutting with good visibility is best. Straight surgical scissors have a mechanical lead for cutting tough tissue. In some instances, straight surgical scissors can give a more accurate straight cut than the curved ones. As opposed to straight scissors, curved surgical scissors have more of 30 to 40 degrees additional visibility & mobility.

A large selection of bone cutters are crucial surgical scissors for targeted purposes. Because of the resistance that bone offers to cutting, with the surgical instruments a palmed grip, sometimes with 2 hands, is neccessary as oppossed to the finger grip which is used with other surgical scissors. The jaws of bone-cutting medical tools close more or less suddenly under a large amount of tension as the bone fragments split. The tips of the blades, therefore, should be clear of any structure you do not desire to include in the cut. i.e., When using rib cutters its mostly customary to point the shears perpendicular to the chest wall with open blades as opposed to aimed toward the intercostal bundle. After starting a bite into the bone with rongeurs, kerrisons or any other type of cutters, all of the tension at the wound is rest to ease, so that the surgical instrument will not slip deeper as the bite is complete. Security is thus gained when the only tension on the tissue is between the jaws of the surgical instruments.
