With rare exceptions, finding the right approach to parenting is a difficult issue, and one that has to be reassessed almost every day. As you attempt to sort out the various situations that come up between parents and children, the following suggestions can come in handy.

Even though there are a variety of ideas about the preferred style of parenting, the consensus seems to be that the most effective approach is the one known as authoritative. Whereas the authoritarian parent expects children to obey unquestioningly, the authoritative parent sets clear rules, but at the same time allows children to ask questions and have some say in important matters. The authoritative approach is one that aims for the happy medium between strictness and permissiveness. It seems clear that kids require some boundaries and rules, but they also should be able to understand the reasoning behind these. It's not always easy to find this ideal balance, but part of your job as a parent is looking at where your kids are and figuring this out day by day. Children always pick up much of their behavior from watching their parents, as you are their first role models in life. Parents must, therefore, exhibit the kind of values they expect their children to take on. If you want your children to be respectful of other people, for example, you have to demonstrate this quality yourself. Telling your kids something only goes so far, but setting the right example makes a real difference. In everyday life, there are always going to be different rules for kids and adults, but what we're talking about here is fundamental values, where you should set a good example. While telling your kids to behave in a certain way can be effective up to a point, setting a good example is much better.

What's the best way to get your child to stop doing something or to change his or her behavior? One way that you can get your child to do the right thing is to give them choices. Doing this takes you away from being negative and allows you to be positive. Let's say you just planted your garden and your child is out there with the giant shovel.

Instead of raising your voice and causing a scene, you can offer them a choice which allows them to choose something not related to the bad situation. Your child, by presenting the choice, can make the right decision, and you can control what is going on by providing the choices.

You always have to improvise as a parent at times, as things will occur that you had never even thought about. Nonetheless, it's still worthwhile to develop some parenting ideas of your own, as they can work for you at least a good portion of the time. One thing you have to remember is that you can only control your kids up to a point, as they have minds of their own.
