With almost everything being computerised and almost all homes and all businesses owning at least one computer there are many choices out there for systems to run smoothly and effectively. One of the decisions necessary to make is the type of cartridge to use in a particular printer. Most people are aware that there are two main options available; these being ink cartridges or toner cartridges, but the majority do not understand the difference.

Ink cartridges
Using ink for the printing process is similar to a standard writing pen being used on paper. The ink cartridge works by applying pressure to the cartridge containing the liquid ink which is then transferred to the page. This occurs through tiny holes in the cartridge wall. The type of ink used can be oil based but is more often water-based. These types of printer cartridges are very easy to use. They are small devices that are simple to replace when the ink runs out. The number of documents that can be printed before a cartridge is low or out of ink is typically high making them value for money. Ink cartridges can be coloured, often available individually for when a single colour is required.

Toner cartridges
Toner cartridges are used in laser printers and use toner which is a carbon based powder that is mixed with a polymer to create a fine ‘dust’ like product. A laser is used to transfer the toner onto the page through heating the toner particles which attaches them to the paper by static electricity. Different manufacturers use different toner particle size which results in varied resolution. The smaller the toner size usually equates to a better quality of resolution. As toner cartridges are typically lager than ink they can hold more toner and, therefore, print more pages before running out. This does, however, make them more expensive.
