Breast enhancement is a surgical procedure to make breasts look larger and fuller by using small bags filled with saline (salt) water or silicone gel as implants. The implants expand the breast area and increase cup size, producing better contour. Although they do not interfere with breastfeeding, many women are still concerned about the implants. However, science has put such fears to rest. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved silicone breast implants for women aged 22 and older and for breast reconstruction in women of any age. Women whose breasts have been surgically enhanced can still breastfeed and nurse their newborn.

The place of incision to insert the implants, the placement of the implant, the type of implant, and the skill of the surgeon are important factors which affect the ability to breastfeed. Surgical incisions made under the breast and in the armpits do not interfere with breastfeeding. However, experts caution that nipple incisions for implants should be avoided if breastfeeding is essential. Placement also plays an important role as pressure from implants can cause damage. Implants below the chest muscle are least likely to disturb the milk nerves. A board-certified surgeon with the necessary technical expertise and case experience will be able to correctly customize breast enhancement to the goals and requirements of the individual.

Women with breast implants also may have concerns that silicone from implants could leak into the milk and endanger a baby's health. However, it is highly unlikely that silicone molecules, even if leaked from an implant, could get into the milk ducts. FDA studies also dismiss silicone gel implants as a source of harm. Furthermore even if the solution from saline
breast implants could leak into a mother's milk, there is no danger since this solution could not harm either the mother or the newborn's health.

There is a high incidence of women who have had breast enhancement and are able to successfully breastfeed their young. Dr. Stephen Greenberg, a certified plastic surgeon and author of "A Little Nip, A Little Tuck" says that a vast majority of women with breast implants can breastfeed with ease. In most cases, a mother's breast milk supply will be adequate. However, in instances where there is a decrease in the milk supply post the implants, using a breast pump after each feeding can help to stimulate the breasts and increase milk production in the glands.

The FDA's approval of silicone gel implants, surgeons' expertise in breast enhancement and the information available on breast implants all endorse its safety and effectiveness. Women no longer have to fear undergoing breast enhancement as it is now possible to achieve the aesthetic results one desires without compromising breastfeeding.
