Also being an excellent medical tools for sharp cutting, surgical scissors with proper tips are ideal for blunt dissection by ranking, probing or spreading. For blunt dissection, surgical scissors have an extra ability as opposite to a clamp, because switching back and forth from blunt cutting to sharp can be accomplished without changing medical instruments. Blunt cutting seperates the layers of tissue. The cementing substance can be either normal areolar tissue, as between fascial layers, or scar tissue from previous surgery.

In the blunt dissection of layers bound by scar tissue you will come upon hazard where the scar tissue traverses the cut in one of the layers. It's considered risky when the cutting between layers when you have more tensile strength than the bound layers of the adhesions. Some scars may bring together bowel and fascia or parietal pericardium with bigger tensile strength to the heart than is present in the bowel or inside the myocardium. Blunt dissection in these cases may be inappropriate and can result in an unintended enterostomy or entrance into the myocardium. It is therefore hazardous for blunt cutting where old scars traverse natural planes or where you see tough scar tissue already formed which is more dense than the structure.

Most blunt dissection and cutting with surgical scissors is under direct view. Blunt dissection and blind cutting could be useful, secure and accurate. Such blind cutting is done between well-established tissue planes in anatomic regions far away from important structures like big blood vessels and nerves. Blind surgical scissor dissection is great method for opening a tunnel just beneath the dermis to insert a bovine heterograft when creating an arterial venous fistula.

You can also put blind surgical dissection to work in your advantage while your doing a breast biopsy in a small cirumareolar incision. It's difficult to notice a deep side of a breats lump; but, by palpation, when you use a left pointer-giner as a guide, scissors may be used to circumscrive & get rid of the lump.

When you expose major blood vessels by cutting, be sure to express caution when performing this, because you could tear branches and small tributaries. If surgical scissors are used to spread parallel to a major vessel, concentrate on preventing any tearing of small side branches; if you spread perpendicular to the great blood vessel; direct your attention plaques. Both methods, through having drawbacks, could be used if only the promblems are understood.
